Maldives: launch of “Fansa-aahi” Campaign

MIRA launches “Fansa-aahi” Campaign

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has always worked towards promoting voluntary compliance by making it convenient for taxpayers to fulfil their tax obligations and to deter non-compliance through regulated actions. With the aim of enhancing voluntary tax compliance levels among taxpayers, MIRA launched a special campaign under the name 'Fansa-aahi'. The objective of this campaign is to deregister businesses no longer in operation and to enhance the rate of on-time submission rate of tax returns as it is crucial for the effective running of the tax system.

This campaign is conducted with the periodic targets and MIRA aims to contact 80% of the non-filers and late filers by the end of June 2023. As of now, 58% of the non-filers and late filers have been reached. Under this campaign, MIRA is offering leniencies such as waiving off tax related fines of those who wish to deregister and eliminate inactive taxpayers from the registry. MIRA is also working with other line ministries and local councils to identify inactive businesses and to deregister these businesses. To make this campaign more efficient, taxpayer engagement teams also reached out to all identified inactive businesses through calling tasks and physical verification.

Under the umbrella of the Fansa-aahi campaign, MIRA has also devised a range of strategic initiatives aimed at promoting and facilitating the on-time filing of tax returns. To make the public more aware of this campaign, additional of the Fansa-aahi campaign are disseminated on the social media platforms, as well as the MIRA website.

By encouraging inactive businesses to deregister and operating businesses to file their returns on-time MIRA aims to achieve 85% on-time filing rate by the end of October 2023. This would aid MIRA to reach the strategic objective of 95% on-time filing rate by the end of 2024.
