The role of intelligence gathering and investigation is increasingly becoming one of the critical compliance enforcement strategies. While the level of voluntary compliance continues to show great improvement in many tax administrations, incidences of tax evasion and other tax crimes do not appear to be abating. In majority of instances, substantial revenues have been unearthed and successful prosecution registered through investigation backed by a robust intelligence gathering framework. Even where such breakthroughs are isolated, they still send a strong message to delinquent taxpayers and thus help reshape the compliance attitude.

CATA in partnership with NADT organised this interactive 5 days’ workshop on 26 February to 01 March 2024 at the National Academy of Direct Taxes Academy, Nagpur. The programme covered upon various tools and techniques in intelligence gathering and techniques of investigation in different sectors. Shared insights on intelligence gathering from the perspective of allied agencies such as Enforcement Directorate of India. Provided inputs on digital forensics techniques in intelligence gathering and investigation and shared knowledge on Financial investigation in accounting data. The programme also offered a forum for discussion on country specific issues and deliberations thereupon, where senior officials shared country experiences on the various approaches on the deploying in these areas both at operational and strategic levels.

 

Workshop objectives:

·         To provide a common forum for senior and middle level tax administrators to meet and discuss issues and problems of common concern.

·         To discuss challenges involved in intelligence gathering and investigations across jurisdictions.

·         To deliberate upon various tools and techniques in intelligence gathering and techniques of investigation in different sectors.

·         To share insights on intelligence gathering from the perspective of allied agencies such as Enforcement Directorate.

·         To provide inputs on digital forensics techniques in intelligence gathering and investigation, and share knowledge on financial investigation in accounting data.

·         To provide a forum for discussion on country specific issues and deliberations thereupon.
